After months of controversy surrounding the Columbia Market House, Columbia Borough Council voted 5-2 tonight to disband the Columbia Historic Market House Trust, effective immediately.
After input from citizens and sometimes heated discussion among Council members, Councilman Barry Ford introduced a motion to disband the Trust, which was seconded by Councilwoman Renae Sears.
Those in favor of the motion:
Barry Ford
Renae Sears
Mike Beury
Mary Wickenheiser
Jim Smith
Opposed:
Mary Barninger
Kelly Murphy
A rally was held on Monday, October 22nd, at 5 p.m. in front of the Borough Office, 308 Locust Street, in support of Carmen Swinehart and Keagy’s Produce and to protest the actions of the Market House Trust.
Carmen Swinehart was fired from her position as Market House manager several months ago amid controversy, and Keagy’s Produce was recently evicted, allegedly without just cause and in a discriminatory manner.
Rally participants then attended the Committee of the Whole meeting at the Borough Office at 6 p.m., at which time the Columbia Borough Council voted to disband the Columbia Historic Market House Trust.
