Lancaster County Coroner to become sole petitioner in public records case | WITF

The Lancaster County coroner has taken over a court appeal seeking to block access to information the state Open Records office and the courts have repeatedly determined should be accessible to the public.

The coroner, Dr. Stephen G. Diamantoni, said Tuesday his lawyers plan to amend a court filing to make it clear the broader county government is not behind the challenge.

Diamantoni is specifically appealing a December ruling by the state Office of Open Records ordering the coroner to publicly disclose the name of a 3-year-old boy who died in an accidental shooting in southern Lancaster County in the fall.

But he is arguing more broadly that the names of any minor whose death is investigated by the coroner, an elected official whose government office is taxpayer funded, should be shielded from the public.

Columbia students ‘learn the process of planting fresh food’ from school gardens

When: Columbia Borough School District board committee meeting, Jan. 2.

What happened: Grace Julian, co-founder and executive director of the Edible Classroom, presented to the board regarding her program’s initiatives at Columbia, which involves students in all three schools planting and maintaining a garden.

Background: The Edible Classroom started at Columbia last summer. A summer garden camp, funded by local businesses and organizations, provided 52 Columbia Borough students with the opportunity to learn through gardening.

Columbia PA Alert: Traffic shift on Route 30 bridge

Columbia Borough, PA ALERT: PennDOT announced today that traffic will be shifted this Sunday (1/14/2024) on westbound Route 30 at the nearly 1.5-mile median barrier project on the Route 30 (Wrights Ferry) Bridge connecting Lancaster and York counties. 

Weather permitting, work will begin to shift traffic at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 14. Westbound Route 30 traffic will be shifted toward the median so the contractor can paint lines and perform steel repairs under the bridge from the right shoulder.
