About Town

Pics from around Columbia over the past week…
 Bunny with baby

 There’s that one-footed gull again.

Warthog – one of two that fly over our area almost daily.

 A speed bump – on a sidewalk?

The Yellow Submarine, now with four-wheel drive.

 Parking lot-to-be on Commerce Street

 Ferals at Take Away Refuse.

Wishful thinking or just dirty windows?

 Don’t lose your drawers.

Decorative railing at the window of Rocky’s BBQ.

 Decorative railing at Stover’s.

And in Stover’s window – a sign expressing exasperation at customers being ticketed by parking enforcement officers.
Nothing like discouraging customers of a long-standing Columbia business.

 Case in point.
There goes one of the enforcers, off to check the Avenue H lot.
Gotta stay ahead in the daily competition.

 Sticker shock

 More abuse of eminent domain.

The shape of the signpost actually does indicate the bend in the road ahead.
Houses at the bottom of Locust to be demolished for the planned apartment building.

Two parking spaces here will be allotted for vehicles during construction of the building.
According to the draft agenda for the 2-27-18 Public Works/Public Property Committee meeting: “Von Hess Foundation gave approval for right to sub-lease 2 of the spaces to 789 Main Street, LLC and permission to use their lot for the storage of necessary vehicles and equipment during construction.”

 Owned by a proud miser?

 Into the drink?

Well-fed feral who apparently depends upon the kindness of strangers.

 Litter on Locust

 The 400 block

Some folks can’t function without the street sweeper.

A well-known local artist just bought this building at 475 Locust.

Similar to the Google Car, it’s the “Here” Car.

It’s a 3D mapping vehicle, as described in the article…“HERE”!!!

A classic-looking light globe at LGH Columbia

This one’s on the 600 block of Poplar.

Complete with rosette (and spider nest?)

 Over the moon.

Sing!
Spring is right around the corner.
The evidence is easy to see….
Togetherness

 Togetherness
 Togetherness

 Togetherness

  1. That gray/hite cat is not a farrel cat. She thinks she is a dog that goes in and on of the house. She just can't keep a collar on either. She is well feed cat, sleeps in the house at but night and is fixed, how can I keep her from doing what comes natural to her. I won't, she is fine. That apartment complex is just wrong, half the town is already a renter and my taxes are way high.

  2. If you know you are going to park in town at a parking meter, you know you need to pay. Really folks, it's common sense.. the meters aren't new. Pay attention to the signs and if there is a meter, pay up. parking enforcement is only doing their job.

  4. its a shame that saturdays aren't free parking for all the businesses in town!! maybe some business owners should attend a borough council meeting and start to talk about that. also, i keep seeing more and more properties that were owner occupied now being rented out. the borough MUST step in and do something to prevent one more property being turned into a rental prpoerty. holy heck, we're going on a thousand rental properties in this itty bitty town…which is a SERIOUS problem because our taxes are so out of control.

  5. Because giving someone a parking ticket is a GREAT way to encourage them to come back. The streets will remain empty, the businesses ever-closing, but hey, at least we have those meters! One of these days I'm sure Stover's will say “to hell with it” and close up. Another empty storefront.

  6. Well we could remove the meters and let those who live in the many rental units in the area park their cars in front of the businesses all day long not allowing customers to park. (Sarcasm intended). Actually, a possible, real, solution would be to identify areas where businesses draw the most drive in traffic, remove the meters in those areas, and post signs with time restrictions, such as “15 minute parking only” or something along that line.

  10. This project has been through Columbia Borough Planning Commission, Lancaster County Planning Commission, Zoning Hearing Board and Historic Architectural Review Board. The property was posted for the Zoning Hearing and there were several property owners/residents in attendance at that hearing. The HARB hearings have legal notices published with the properties under review listed.

  11. They are NOT going to run a long time news agency out of business. They are making A LOT of money!!! Don't be fooled. Jim Stover, other than make money off of Columbians – what else have you been doing?? I don't know – maybe he is a very charitable person – I'm just asking. Plug the meter or park on another block that doesn't have meters and walk!

  14. Thank you. But to answer the question,it looks like a prodject, it should have to fit in to the historic look, and why are home owners taken over the coals for they homes, they should be able to do things to there homes that they(not the historic board) approves. THE TOWN GETS POINTS ,BUT WHAT DOES THAT DO FOR THE OWNER?
