  1. You want to know where the poverty is in this state, just look where the failing schools are on this list. Segregation by school district.

  2. Yes, the tax rate is much higher than most BUT our prosperities are assessed at much lower than other areas. If I were to take my home and drop it on a piece of land in West Hempfield, I would be paying about the same amount in taxes simply because the assessment would be higher.

  3. That's funny. Using realestate comparisons it is cheaper in West Hempfield than Columbia, comparing apples to apples. The property has higher value in West Hempfield but the taxes are lower.

  4. It sure would be nice if people would think before they write. Maybe this is a councilman or school board member who is trying to convince people (or should I say bs people) into thinking the tax rate in Columbia is know different than elsewhere.

  5. Exactly! The officials need to pull their heads out of the sand and do what is best for the students and community. CHANGE IS NEEDED FOR THE BETTER, WHETHER YOU LIKE CHANGE OR NOT.

  6. My son lives in west hempfield and pays 1500.00 dollars in property tax. A home of the same size and in a less desirable area is currently for sale in Columbia with property taxes of 2,546.00 dollars. There are no school buses in Columbia, therefore none of our tax dollars are going toward the purchase, maintenance, gasoline, and salaries for drivers. That money is free to go elsewhere and we're still not ahead.
