Crowd braves the rain to lay wreaths at Mount Bethel on Saturday

A crowd of people withstood the rainy weather December 14, 2019, to pay homage to those who served the country in Columbia, PA.

John Hinkle Jr. welcomed volunteers and the Catholic War Vet Color Guard presented the American flag.

Sergeant 1st Class Karen Zercher (Army),1st Class Petty Officer Owen Brunner (Navy), Corporal Jeffrey Detz (Marine), Staff Sergeant Nicholas McCarty (Air Force), 3rd Class Petty Officer, Thomas J. McCarty (Coast Guard), and 2nd Engineer George Biagio (Merchant Marine) presented decorated wreaths for their branch of service. Sergeant Albert C. Storm Jr. (Army) presented a decorated wreath for POW/MIA veterans.

A resolution was made to honor of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Edmund J. Wickenheiser Jr.

Ending the ceremony a gun volley by Vet 21 and taps played by Frost Umble.

As rain continued to fall, families stayed to lay wreaths at the veterans’ graves. Over 600 veterans are laid to rest at Mount Bethel Cemetery and every single one of them received a wreath. People throughout the community made monetary contributions to make sure every veteran grave was decorated.

Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery organized it, but it’s about all the people who volunteer and sponsor wreaths, to make it happen in Columbia.

Everyone who placed a wreath said the veteran’s name out loud so they are never forgotten.

Wreaths now lay inside Mount Bethel Cemetery.

About Town 12/16/19

This week’s photos of Columbia

Awww, he’s so thirsty he had to drink from the creek.

That face looks familiar.
Could it be…?
Nah . . .
Or could it?!!!

 Santa’s hiding back there.

But next day, there he was, checking on wish lists.

Yet another of the thousands of photos of the bridge

In some places, Halloween’s still hanging around.

Speaking of Lloyd Mifflin, here’s one of his landscapes, complete with atmospheric perspective.
Just kidding. It’s a rubber bumper on one of the docks stored under the bridge at River Park.

Construction is still going on at the LGH facility on North 7th.

Note the changes in traffic patterns.

 Gone for good?

 In a row

 Paintball practice?
(From last week)

That’s one way to block the street.

There it goes – the wrong way at the bridge plaza.

It was heading towards Santa’s encampment but then backed up again.

Santa has the power to change the course of traffic.

There’s his encampment now at Rotary Park.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the power of correct spelling.

Still hangin’ around in Avenue G

Mobile homes on the tracks – That means they really are mobile.

Fundraiser by Steve Lenox : Memorial Fund for Detective Joseph Seals

We are heartbroken at the loss of yet another police officer killed in the line of duty.

This week it hits us again right here at home in Jersey City.

The officers involved came to work Tuesday, December 10, like they did every day, seeking to make our city safer.

They were ambushed by criminals, one was assassinated.

Despite the warlike situation they were placed in these men and women saved countless lives through their heroic efforts. We are proud of them all.

Detective Joe Seals won’t be returning to his family, his wife and five children are in mourning.

The JCPOBA has set up this GoFundMe page to accommodate all of the generous offers of support we have received in the hours since this incident.

All of the dollars raised will go directly to the Seals family, helping them cover education, housing, and other expenses for the five children that Joe loved so dearly.

Mount Bethel Cemetery Announced as an Official Location for the 2019 National Wreaths Across America Day

The cemetery will join more than 1600 participating locations across the country on Saturday, December 14, 2019 to proclaim “Everyone plays a part”.

Columbia Falls, MAINE, and Columbia, PENNSYLVANIA—December 14, 2019 —National nonprofit Wreaths Across America [WAA] announced today that Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia, PA will be joining in the effort to support the mission to REMEMBER, HONOR, TEACH, as an official location for 2019. This is the THIRD year that the cemetery will participate in this national event.

In 2018, nearly 1.8 million veteran wreaths were placed on headstones at 1,640 participating cemeteries around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud.

This year, the ceremony, held simultaneously across the country at more than 1,600 locations, will be on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Beginning at 12 noon, at 700 Locust Street, Columbia, PA, master of ceremonies JOHN HINKLE will acknowledge seven branches of military service and a resolution to Ed Wickenheiser. Included will be the Catholic War Vet color guard, a bugler to play taps and a 21-gun salute.

The Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery plans to raise enough funds to place 690 remembrance wreaths on the headstones of all the local heroes laid to rest at Mount Bethel Cemetery. Our goal is to place a live balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every veteran buried there spreading patriotism and commemoration for the ultimate sacrifices they made for our country. Mount Bethel Cemetery has veterans from the Revolutionary War and every US conflict up to and including Vietnam.

“Every donation and wreath sponsorship is a meaningful gift from an appreciative supporter who knows what it means to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “We are so grateful to the community of Columbia, PA for participating in our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.”

National Wreaths Across America Day is a free event, open to all. For more information, to donate or to sign up to volunteer, please visit www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.
